Presentation Sheet

voCODlv-80.01 - 16-bit Voice Codec

Δ∑ Analog to Digital and Digital to analog Converters in voCOD make it a low-power but quite dense phone Codec, complete with Analog front-end and back-end with their digital filters, for the Extended Audio Range. It is developed for easy design-in by SoC Integrators involved with logic fluency, while its Functional and Timing Digital Model per VSIA eliminates the need for delving in analog circuitry.

Applications

This Analog Front-End Codec is dedicated to voice applications as diverse as:

  • Cellular phone
  • Internet phone (VoIP)
  • Bluetooth headset
  • Portable voice Recorder/Player
  • Personal Digital Assistant
  • Speech Recognition

Benefits

  • Feature completeness for mobile phone applications:
    • ADC and DAC SNR of 80 dB in the voice bandwidth
    • 2 mono microphone-inputs
    • 1 mono line-output to drive external power amplifier
    • 1 mono BTL speaker driver on 16 and 32 Ohm delivering up to 50 mW output power at 1.8 V
  • Low Bill-of-Material : elimination of discrete components from the Bill of Material
    • A capacitor-less 16-Ohm BTL speaker output is proposed allowing a pop-up free audio output with direct connection
    • No need for external resistance
    • Very small silicon area
  • Built-in clock manager: PLL-less thanks to variable OSR

Performances and features

  • 80 dB SNR typ (for the DAC), per the "practical benchmark" in the 300 - 3,400 Hz band
  • 75 dB SNR A-weighted in the 300 - 20k Hz band
  • 0.06% THD on 16 or 32 Ohm load
  • Data sampling frequency Fs: 8K, 16K or 24k Hz
  • Operates at 1.8 V in 0.18 µm and at 3.3 V in 0.13 µm and 90 nm
  • Analog configuration:
    • Mono ADC channel, two multiplexed analog inputs (microphone)
    • Mono BTL speaker output with capacitor-less capability (suppression of bulky DC-blocking output capacitors) with 50 mW output power (16 Ω, 1.8 V)
    • A mono line-output
  • Separate power-down modes for ADC and DAC
  • G712 digital filter template
  • Junction temperature range from -40 °C to 85 °C
  • Semi-automatically retargetable to any pure logic CMOS process or process with specific capacitor layer (MiM or other linear and dense capacitor)

Options for adapting voCOD configuration to the application requirements:

Analog configurations:

  • 8/32 Ω or 16/32 Ω speaker output delivering 100 mW output power (8 Ω, 1.8 V)
  • additional analog line input or output
  • integrated earphone driver …

Digital configurations:

  • Several digital interfaces available: linear PCM, 8 bit parallel μC interface, SPI, I2C
  • Optional features: digital side-tone, ALC (automatic ADC level control)
  • Flexible master clock: variable integer OSR or fractional OSR (PLL-less solution)
  • 64 kHz sampling frequency available for 24 MHz MCLK to address Bluetooth headset applications
